Warratahs for the win! I just love Waratahs, and wanted to share some tips for growing these beauties in your garden. Location, Location, Location! Waratahs thrive in well-drained soil and plenty of sunlight. Select a mostly sunny spot in your garden (afternoon shade is good), with soil that's slightly acidic. Good drainage is key to their success When to plant? The best time to plant Waratahs is in autumn or early spring Planting Dig a hole that's slightly larger than the root ball of your Waratah plant. Plant it at the same depth it was in its nursery pot, making sure the crown (where the stems meet the roots) is at ground level. Water in well. Mulch Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture. Pruning Prune your Waratah after flowering to encourage bushier growth Fertilising Waratahs are sensitive to phosphorus, so choose a low-phosphorus fertiliser, I choose to use Bush Tucker. Apply it sparingly in late winter or early spring. You win some and you loose some, that’s farming. As you can see in the video the Proteas I planted in February have very mixed results. My Donnas, King Pinks and Special Pink Ice look brilliant, unfortunately my Pink Creams look very sad. I would love to hear from other growers if they have any insight to the cause of the blackening leaves, perhaps a fungal problem 🤷‍♀️. Chemical free, naturally dried Proteas for sale. At Outback Yack we believe that nature is perfect, there is no need to use preservatives, dye or anything else when you are drying your flowers. My method is to remove the leaves and hang upside down in my floral studio (ahem.....dreaming, my garage) where it is cool and dark and completely leave them alone for two to three weeks. Assessing storm damage from last night. We had a downpour at around 5pm. The hardest hit were the rows we haven’t mulched yet, ironically we are waiting on our delivery 🤦‍♀️ Overall, it’s not too bad, an hour or so on the shovel will fix it. This hand has just hand weeded 115 Waratah plants (ouch)! My Waratahs are the furthest away from the house so they get the least amount of attention 😬 Why hand weed? It's simple. I don't want to smell a flower and inhale chemicals so why should my customers? While we do use chemicals on the farm it is minimal and it is never on my flowers, so rest assured when you smell an Outback Yack flower you will only smell nature's goodness. Yes, I should have worn gloves. Hello Florist Friends! I have been experimenting with growing some lesser known varieties of Proteas. In this picture I have miniature Protea cynaroides otherwise known as miniature King Proteas both in the white and pink form freshly cut this morning. They are much smaller, therefore much lighter and easier to work with than the standard King Proteas. As their name suggests their stems are also much shorter (they are approximately 15cm long) so they are not suitable for bouquets, however they are fabulous for small posies, low table arrangements and also for drying to adding to installations or wreaths. If you are interested in this bunch of locally grown chemical free flowers please DM me I have this small bunch I can deliver to Albury or Wodonga this afternoon. Back to work after an amazing holiday with the family. We love a road trip and explored the amazing Florieu and Eyre Penninsula's of South Australia. The kids were even patient with me asking my husband to pull over multiple times to take photos of roadside flowers.....well, let's say there was fewer complaints that normal! Rows and rows of glorious natives! We have been working hard at Outback Yack in our little patch of paradise in North East Victoria. It’s easy to get overwhelmed on your never ending list of jobs on the farm and thanks to my amazing husband Ben, this video has reminded me how much we have achieved in just over 12 months on the farm. Delivered this cute bunch to @viviennecate today. Sadly, her beautiful store was broken into last night, but Karen the true professional had the biggest smile on her face and was welcoming customers back with open arms today. This bunch features my first White Crown Protea 🙌 We planted White and Pink Crowns in October last year and they have been trying to flower for months but for the overall health of the plant and to develop strong root stock I have been (very) reluctantly cutting them off when they have been in bud. I'm new the new kid on the block when it comes to floral designing, and I have to say this was the best 🙌 Thanks so much to Bree and Leigh for allowing me to go nuts. The best part about it is (with the exception of some limited zip ties) it can all go into the compost bin. You will never see Outback Yack work that will contain floral foam - ever. This festive installation has been installed for 3 weeks now, and it still looks fab. Epiphany. I had one recently, it was so strong it was like a lightening bolt had shot through my body. I'm at the start of what I hope to be a very long floral journey and I have been blown away by the community support. I'm truly humbled that I have had interest in my new found passion. Karen @viviennecate asked me to create a floral display above her shop windows which I gladly obliged. If you ever visit Yackandandah please make sure a visit to her gorgeous store is on your list! How on earth did we get to December already?! 😳 My ‘to-do’ list is never ending, and why do I get so critical on myself for not getting through it all? Has as it been 12 days since my last social media post? Yes. Was it 23 days before the one before that? Yes. Am I horrified about that? Hell yes! But, guess what? I am a mother, I have a full time role, I also help administratively with my husband’s business. Plus, I am also trying to establish my flower farm and invest in newly found creative outlet and passion, floristry. Don’t get me wrong, I know that I am not alone. We all have competing priorities that demand our time, so let’s raise a glass to not giving ourselves such a hard time and accepting that we simply cannot do it all – all the time. So excuse the social media spamming over the next little while, I have a LOT to catch up on as I will be sharing some recent projects that I am really proud of. More plants are in.... It's been a busy two weeks at Outback Yack. We planted another 100 plants, mainly proteas but also some lucadendrons. It really isn't the ideal time for planting but we have had an unusual wet spring and as long as we are vigilant with watering they will be fine. We are also just in time for some predicted rain tomorrow for the next few days. I still need to mulch. Mulching is such a powerhouse, it improves the soil, helps retain moisture and keep the soil cool and helps control weeds. But want to know a secret? It is this flower farmers least favorite part about planting. Flower cake topper 🍰 I love the physically demanding aspect of being a flower farmer, but I have equally loved creative aspect of working with flowers. No arrangement is ever the same and I love I that I am working with a perishable product. Why? It forces you to enjoy those flowers in that moment. When it comes time to part ways, you create something else. Just brilliant! To enhance my creative skills I have invested in a membership with Nadine @wildflorastudio There is an amazing catalogue of tutorials, some live events, Q&A opportunities and Nadine has built a wonderful community who are very generous with sharing their knowledge. This cake topper was a challenge as part of my membership and I really enjoyed putting it together. You will see further challenges in my upcoming newsfeed. Logo spam - But this is important 👇⁣ ⁣ This isn't just a pretty logo, this one pays homage to our traditional owners of the land. According to exploreyackandandah.com.au: ⁣ The Aboriginal word for the Yackandandah area is Dhudhuroa. To the Dhudhuroa people Yackandandah means “one boulder on top of another at the junction of two creeks”.⁣ ⁣ Can you see this in my logo? Can you also see Outback Yack initials, 'OY' - pretty clever right?!⁣ ⁣ Given that the land is critical to my new venture, it is important to me that I practice regenerative agriculture methods where possible. I may not get it 100% right but I am looking forward to leaving the soil in better condition than I found it. So much to learn and I can't wait to dig in, pardon the pun.⁣ ⁣ It's a no brainer, healthy soil equals stronger disease resistant flowers, and a better overall product for my customers.

🍃 Seasons 🍃⁣ ⁣ I just love seeing everything wake up in Spring. We seem to have some warm days and then back to cold with a hint of thunderstorms. Although, as a flower farmer I never wish the rain away.⁣ ⁣ This is my white fig. Last year it was hard pruned by our wildlife, I'm yet to work out if it was the rabbits, deer or kangaroos 🤷‍♀️⁣ ⁣ 🤞 it is unharmed this season.

First time growing Blushing Bride and I'm in love. Just look at the center, it looks like tiny feathers. So delicate and pretty. ⁣ ⁣ Don't worry, I will be getting more friends for you, many more.
